- Oona’s travel insurance purchases rose by 328% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year (YoY)

- To leverage the growing interest in international travel, Oona is offering up to 30% off on travel insurance during this year’s school holiday period
Jakarta, 11 June 2025 - Oona Insurance, the leading digital general insurer in Southeast Asia, reports a significant spike in travel insurance purchases, highlighting renewed enthusiasm for overseas travel among Indonesian consumers. Despite a moderating pace in overall consumer spending, Oona saw a significant increase in travel insurance sales in Q1 2025 compared to the same period last year. This jump points to a growing priority among travellers to safeguard their trips with comprehensive protection.
Elizabeth Eka Suryana, Head of Commercial Travel Insurance Oona Indonesia, stated that the company has recorded growing demand for travel protection products from Indonesian consumers. “Travel insurance purchases grew by 328% in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, at a time when overall consumer purchasing power is weakening,” she said.
Elizabeth further explained that, in terms of travel type, the share of travel insurance purchased for family trips increased from 21% to 30% (YoY). Meanwhile, individual travel accounts for a significant 70% of trips, indicating that most travelers opt for individual insurance coverage, even when traveling with family. In terms of destination, the top three regions favoured by Indonesian travellers are Europe, Asia Pacific, where Japan leads in popularity, and ASEAN countries such as Singapore, Vietnam, and Malaysia. Travel insurance purchases reflected this trend, with a significant surge for Asia Pacific destinations with an increase of up to tenfold, followed by an increase for ASEAN, and European destinations (Schengen).
This trend also indicates a growing concern among Indonesian travelers about securing protection when traveling abroad. “This awareness marks a positive shift in the behavior of Indonesian travelers, who are now more proactive in planning trips with comprehensive protection. Travel insurance serves as a practical solution against unexpected risks such as lost luggage, flight delays, and trip cancellations,” added Elizabeth.
According to data from Indonesia Statistic Bureau (BPS), the number of outbound passengers recorded in the first quarter of 2025 reached 4,741,829, an increase of 11.72% compared to 4,244,600 passengers in 2024 (YoY). On the other hand, consumer purchasing power in Q1 of this year stood at 4.89% year-on-year (YoY), slightly lower than the same period last year, which was 4.91% (YoY).
To leverage the growing interest in international travel, Oona is offering up to 30% off on travel insurance during this year’s school holiday period, which typically falls between June and July. Currently, Oona Insurance provides a range of travel protection products, including international travel insurance, domestic travel insurance, and coverage for flight delays.
