Oona Insurance Indonesia recorded a 107.6% increase in travel insurance purchases for Schengen destinations in the first half of 2026. The data highlights a shift among Indonesian travelers, who now buy coverage an average of 45 days before departure. Family travelers were the fastest-growing segment, while Oona continues to offer digital purchase and claims services through partners including GoPay, Airpaz, and VFS Global, for peace of mind.

Oona Records 107.6% Increase in Travel Insurance to Schengen, Signaling Greater Maturity Among Indonesian Travelers Going Abroad

As more Indonesians travel overseas and plan increasingly complex international itineraries, travel insurance is becoming an essential part of trip preparation rather than an afterthought. Oona Insurance Indonesia has observed a clear shift in consumer behaviour, with outbound travellers purchasing travel insurance earlier in the planning process as they seek greater certainty and peace of mind before departure.

This shift is reflected in Oona’s internal data for the first half of 2026, which shows a 107.6% increase in travel insurance purchases for Schengen destinations compared to the same period last year. While data from Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) and indicators from the ASTINDO Travel Fair show that the highest volume of outbound traffic continues to head toward regional Asian destinations, Oona’s metrics indicate that for long-haul and complex trips, travelers are increasingly prioritizing coverage well before departure.

"We are seeing a profound transformation in how Indonesians approach international travel. Travel insurance is no longer viewed as a mere administrative box to tick for visa applications or a last-minute add-on," said Kristina Soenarto, Chief Transformation Officer of Oona Insurance Indonesia.

"Today, travelers are thinking deeply about their entire journey. They are proactively preparing for potential disruptions along the way—from medical emergencies to transit delays and lost baggage—making comprehensive protection an essential baseline for their overseas trips."

This growing demand for certainty is clear across different traveler segments. While individual travelers continue to make up the vast majority at nearly 88% of Oona's total Schengen purchases, the family traveler segment emerged as the fastest-growing group, increasing by 130.4% year-on-year.

Because long-haul family trips inherently involve longer durations and multiple transits, modern travelers are taking a highly disciplined approach to ensuring their financial and logistical security.

To support these travelers, Oona integrates its protection directly into the platforms of key travel and lifestyle partners, including GoPay, Airpaz, and VFS Global. This embedded approach allows travelers to secure their coverage directly during the booking, ticketing, or visa application process, providing immediate financial certainty.

This digital-first ease extends directly to Oona's responsive claims infrastructure. In the first half of 2026 alone, Oona settled travel insurance claims totaling more than IDR 100 million, proving that its commitment to speed and reliability matches the exact real-time needs of today's international explorers.

As the upcoming holiday seasons approach and global routes continue to shift, Oona anticipates that this proactive mindset will become the permanent standard for Indonesian travelers seeking to explore both classic global hubs and emerging regional destinations with absolute confidence.
