Can cancer patients be fully cured?

Cancer is one of the most feared diseases, but not all cancers are a hopeless diagnosis. Cancer recovery and survival rates vary greatly depending on the type of cancer, the stage at which it is diagnosed, and access to appropriate treatment. This article discusses, honestly and based on evidence, the chances of recovering from cancer, the factors that influence prognosis, and why financial protection through critical illness insurance plays an important role throughout the treatment journey.

Why Understanding Cancer Is Important for Indonesian Society

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Indonesia. According to data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, cancer accounts for approximately 12% of all deaths caused by non-communicable diseases each year. Ironically, many cancer cases in Indonesia are only detected at an advanced stage, when treatment options are more limited and the costs required are significantly higher.

Data from Globocan 2022 shows that Indonesia recorded more than 400,000 new cancer cases and more than 230,000 cancer-related deaths in a single year. These figures place Indonesia among the countries with the highest cancer burden in Southeast Asia.

However, behind these seemingly alarming statistics, there is good news that is often not communicated clearly enough: many types of cancer have high recovery and survival rates if they are detected and treated early. Understanding this is the first step toward facing cancer with greater preparedness.

Can Cancer Be Completely Cured?

Can cancer be completely cured?

Prof. Ari Fahrial Syam from FKUI explains that cancer does not always mean death, because patients can reach a stage of “remission,” in which cancer cells are no longer detected after therapy. Although it is not considered completely cured in medical terms, patients in remission can live healthy and active lives while continuing regular check-ups.

In the medical world, doctors often use the term remission rather than “completely cured” because signs of cancer are no longer detected after treatment. Remission can last a long time, but patients still need regular check-ups because some types of cancer have a risk of recurring.

In general, patients’ chances of recovery and survival rates will be much higher if cancer is found at an early stage. For example, localized breast cancer has a 5-year survival rate of more than 99%. Meanwhile, cervical cancer detected at an early stage also has a very high survival rate, at around 91%.

What Is Remission?

Remission is a condition in which cancer has decreased or can no longer be detected after treatment.

There are two types of remission:

  • Partial remission means the tumor has shrunk in size or the number of cancer cells has decreased.

  • Complete remission means there are no detectable signs of cancer based on the available diagnostic tests.

If a patient remains in complete remission for several years, doctors may describe the condition as being clinically cured. However, regular follow-up examinations remain important.

What Is the 5-Year Survival Rate?

The 5-year survival rate is the percentage of patients who are still alive five years after being diagnosed with cancer. This figure is not a definite prediction for an individual patient; rather, it provides an estimate based on data from many patients with a particular type and stage of cancer. Cleveland Clinic explains that survival rates are commonly used by doctors to help understand prognosis and treatment options.

Why Does Cancer Stage Matter So Much?

Cancer stage indicates how far the disease has progressed. In the early stages, cancer is usually still confined to its organ of origin and is easier to treat through surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of treatments. In Stage IV, the cancer has typically spread to other organs.

In this situation, the goals of treatment may be different, such as slowing the progression of the disease, reducing symptoms, and maintaining quality of life.

Although Stage IV cancer is more difficult to cure, some patients can still live longer with appropriate treatment and regular medical monitoring.

Can Cancer Patients Survive?

Yes, many cancer patients are able to survive. Although cancer is a serious disease, with proper treatment and adequate support, many people can live with cancer for a long time. Survival rates can vary depending on several factors, including the type of cancer, its stage, and the patient's response to treatment.

Can Cancer Be Cured with Alternative Treatment?

Can cancer be cured with alternative treatment?

According to BBC Indonesia, to date there is no valid medical scientific evidence that alternative treatment can completely cure cancer. Therefore, patients should not replace medical therapy with alternative methods without a doctor’s guidance.

For optimal treatment outcomes, patients are advised to follow the recommendations of an oncology specialist. Commonly used cancer therapy options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy, depending on the type of cancer, stage, patient condition, and medical examination results.

Supportive approaches such as balanced nutrition, light physical activity according to ability, psychological support, and stress management can help maintain the patient’s general condition and quality of life during treatment. However, these approaches are complementary and do not replace primary medical therapy.

Factors That Influence the Chances of Cancer Recovery

The chances of cancer recovery are influenced by several key factors, ranging from the type of cancer to the quality of care received by the patient.

1. Cancer type

Some cancers have a better prognosis when detected early, such as breast cancer and cervical cancer.

2. Stage at diagnosis

The earlier cancer is detected, the greater the chances that treatment will be successful.

3. Access to treatment

Prompt diagnosis, adequate healthcare facilities, and adherence to therapy have a major impact.

4. Patient’s health condition

Age, comorbidities, nutritional status, and immune system strength can affect the response to treatment.

5. Follow-up care

Regular examinations help detect recurrence or treatment side effects earlier.

Why Is Financial Protection Important?

Cancer treatment often requires significant costs and can last over the long term. As a critical illness that requires continuous medical care, treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy require physical, mental, and financial preparedness.

The costs that need to be prepared include not only doctor consultations, laboratory tests, imaging, medications, and hospitalization, but also transportation costs, patient companions, and the family’s daily needs during the treatment period. In Indonesia, oncology treatment costs can reach hundreds of millions of rupiah, depending on the type of cancer, stage, hospital, and therapy required.

Without adequate financial planning, treatment costs can disrupt savings, family cash flow, and even long-term financial plans. Therefore, financial protection is an important part of facing the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer.

Cancer insurance can help provide financial benefits when the insured person is diagnosed with a condition covered under the policy. These benefits can be used to help cover treatment costs, recovery expenses, daily living needs, or other expenditures during the treatment period, subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable policy.

With the right protection, you and your family can focus more on treatment, recovery, and medical decision-making without excessive financial pressure. Before purchasing a policy, make sure you understand the benefits, waiting period, exclusions, coverage limits, and claims process so that the protection you choose matches your needs.

Protect yourself and your family from the financial risks associated with cancer by choosing coverage that is clear, relevant, and easy to understand.

Understanding Cancer Recovery More Wisely

Cancer can be cured or reach remission, especially if it is detected early and treated with appropriate medical care. However, the term “complete cure” should be understood carefully in the context of cancer because every case is different. The most important steps are to undergo recommended screening, avoid delaying medical examinations when symptoms appear, follow evidence-based treatment, and prepare financial protection to manage the potential costs of treatment.
